Hello & Welcome to the reissued Robyn Report
“Who are you wearing?” the reporters shout and everyone on the red carpet answers “Versace, Dior, Chanel…,”
Only this time the reporter as shouting at congressmen going into Trumps 1st speech like a carnival barker. No Republicans got the joke. A couple of Democrats did; Al Franken among them. I knew I liked that guy. Anyway, that shout made me think. Which of our personas are we wearing?
Personally I am in the midst of a sea change. What was fact two years ago is not true now. Retiring from a dominant career and bringing a secondary one to the forefront is both exhilarating and confusing. Plus my domestic arrangements have changed. I think the house is happy about it; I’m having fun. But precisely who am I now is open for debate.
I have always been a consultant. First for Oracle, then freelance for Oracle, then freelance for myself, now as a copywriter. While the basics stay the same, there is a need to rebuild connections, learn new languages (like in mould plastics) and how to write compelling sales copy that doesn’t use geek speak. This gets tricky & complicated; not unlike those fancy ball gowns you can’t walk in.
Seriously, don’t we all change personas? When you want to help your prospect make a good buying decision…who are you? When you work with a customer who are you? Even when you cuddle your children or pets, who are you? These are not minor changes. Lot of things change. The quality and volume of your voice changes. Your posture changes. Your thought processes change.
Copywriting, in its raw state, is about a persuasive call to action. When you are writing such a thing, doesn’t a sense of urgency pervade you? When you issue a clarion call to action who are you? Personally I was almost Joan of Arc at one point. It was the wrong clarion call to the wrong audience. Oof. But who are you?
Speaking of clarion calls, have you noticed our President got a clarion call of his own with the defeat of Trumpcare by an in-party rebellion? I’m with Graydon Carter (of VF fame) and Dan Rather (of his own fame lol); essentially both men feel Trump has lost face. Please be advised that this is not intended to be disrespectful of the President. It’ just a statement of fact. Who is Trump wearing now?
So let me send out a clarion call to all. Who are you wearing now?
Let me know your thoughts.
PS Some years ago (in the 80’s) I wrote a Robyn Report which had, at its peak several hundred readers. Not much by today’s standards but not too shabby when you realize this was BI (before Internet). I’m trying again to see what happens.
